A 10kWh lithium battery stores approximately ten kilowatt-hours of electricity. If a device uses 1,000 watts, or 1kW, a perfect 10kWh battery could theoretically run it for ten hours. In real use, losses and protection settings reduce that number.
Most modern home storage batteries in this size use lithium iron phosphate, commonly called LiFePO4 or LFP. LFP batteries are popular because they are stable, durable, and suitable for repeated daily cycling. For solar homes, this matters because the battery may charge and discharge nearly every day. A battery with a long cycle life can handle this routine better than older lead-acid batteries, which normally lose usable capacity faster when cycled deeply.
A 10kWh battery can be wall-mounted, rack-mounted, stackable, or built into an all-in-one cabinet. The best format depends on space, ventilation, installer experience, inverter brand, and future expansion plans.
Is 10kWh Enough for a Home?
For many homes, 10kWh is enough for overnight usage if heavy appliances are controlled. It can usually support essential loads such as LED lighting, a refrigerator, internet router, laptop charging, television, fans, and small kitchen appliances. It may also handle a washing machine, water pump, or microwave for short periods if the inverter and battery discharge rating are strong enough.
It may not be enough for whole-home backup if you want ducted air conditioning, electric heating, geysers, ovens, pool pumps, and EV charging at the same time. These loads can drain a 10kWh battery quickly, so sizing should start from your night-time load profile, not solar size alone.
