Start with essential loads
Write down what must run during an outage: fans, LED lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, laptop charging, CCTV, water motor, medical equipment, and selected sockets. Do not automatically include electric geysers, irons, microwave ovens, large water pumps, multiple air conditioners or EV charging unless the inverter and battery are designed for those heavy loads.
For basic backup, many Lahore homes start around 5kWh usable storage. For longer evening coverage, 7.5kWh to 10kWh is more comfortable. Homes that want air conditioning support, long autonomy or large night loads may need 13.5kWh, 15kWh or multiple battery modules. The best size depends on runtime target, load watts and solar surplus.
Use the simple runtime formula
Battery runtime in hours = usable battery kWh ÷ average load kW. A 10kWh usable battery running a 1kW average load can theoretically last around 10 hours. Real runtime will be lower after inverter losses, battery reserve, high temperature and battery aging. Always keep a safety margin.
Match kWh and kW
Capacity tells you how long the system can run. Power rating tells you what it can run at the same time. A battery with enough kWh may still trip if a motor, pump or compressor requires more surge current than the inverter can deliver.
